Types of Dominoes

Dominoes are small rectangular blocks used for gaming. Normally, they’re twice as long as wide. They’re placed on the edge of a table before each player. In the early 1800s, they started appearing in literature and games in England and France. Then they made their way to the United States in the 1860s.

Traditionally, European-style dominoes were made of dark hardwoods such as ivory and ebony. But today, dominoes are available in many different materials. Various types can be made from plastic or bone.

A number of variants are available, such as games that involve two players. Some domino games are played in a round layout, while others are block and scoring games. Regardless of the format, the goal is to form a tower that is unstable enough for the next player to knock it down.

To form a domino tower, the first player selects a tile. He then plays it onto the table. It must touch one of the ends of the domino chain. If it does, the tower falls down and the game is over. However, if the tower does not fall down, the game can continue for some time.

The second player then plays the same tile to the right of the 6-6 tile. This is called the “double”. While the double is typically the heaviest domino, it can also be the lightest. Other tiles may have the same number on both ends.

One of the most popular types of domino games involves scoring. Each player is given a set of twelve tiles, and each is allowed to add to a line that’s in play. When a player’s chain reaches a predetermined total, the player awards pips to the opposing player.

Sometimes, the opposing player is forced to chip out a certain piece. These games are referred to as trick taking domino games. Generally, if the player can get the opponent to chip out a particular piece, he or she wins the game.

Another common variant is the concentration game. It’s a combination of a solitaire game and a blocking game. The Concentration version is played with a double-six set. Before the start of the game, the players agree on a target score. Once the target is reached, the game stops and the winners are the ones with the least spots on their tiles.

Alternatively, a domino can be played against a computer. There are also online domino games, where you can compete against other people around the world. You can even design your own course for a fun game.

Dominoes are a fun, versatile toy that can be enjoyed by anyone. Whether you’re playing a family game, a group of friends, or online, they can provide hours of entertainment. With some imagination, they can be lined up to create interesting shapes and structures. And if you’re looking for some more games, you can learn to play the games of Che Deng, Tien Gow, and Pai Gow.
